Kingdom of Bahrain

The Kingdom of Bahrain is a great place place to spend the weekend in the GCC. It has the same open feel as Dubai yet was able to retain its small town charm...

The Bahrain Financial Center's twin towers are the tallest towers in Bahrain and the centerpiece of Bahrain's Financial Harbor, a world class waterfront commercial development in Manama. This is Bahrain's attempt to reclaim its heritage as the financial and banking capital of the Arab world from Dubai, UAE.

Set against the background of the sea and palm trees, the Grand Mosque of Bahrain is a beautiful site to behold. Officially known as the Al-Fateh Grand Mosque, it is one of the largest mosques in the world and can accommodate up to 7,000 worshipers at a time. It was built by the late ruler of Bahrain, Sheikh Isa ibn Salman Al Khalifa in 1987.

When I visited the Grand Mosque, I was filled with awe at its natural beauty and grandeur. I was welcomed by the Imam and he spent a significant amount of time explaining the worship traditions as well as the historical ties between Islam and Christianity.

The World Trade Center in Manama is a unique twin tower structure that looks like two gigantic sails. This is the first skyscraper in the world that has three built-in wind turbines to generate electricity. This beautifully-designed  skyscraper is a modern interpretation of the traditional Arabian wind towers where the shape of the structure harnesses the onshore winds of the Arabian Gulf.

The Bahrain Fort is an Islamic fort that dates back to the 16th Century. It is the dominant structure in the Qal'at Al-Bahrain archaeological site. Qal'at Al Bahrain may be the location of the ancient capital of Delmon of the Silmun Civilization which began between 4,000 and 5,000 years ago.

Bahrain's Tree of Life is a 400 year-old mesquite tree. The tree stands alone in the middle of the desert with no apparent visible source of water. Local legend claimed that the tree's longevity was granted by Enki, the mythical god of water, and marked the location of the Garden of Eden.
