Italy (2007)

Italy is one of my favorite vacation destinations in Europe. The Italian people are warm and friendly and the local Italian dishes are fantastic! One can spend a whole month touring the country and would barely scratch the surface of its history and grandeur.

Venice is the most popular city in Northern Italy and a major tourist attraction in Europe. It is one of the most beautiful and romantic cities in the world. During the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, the Republic of Venice was a major maritime power in Europe.

St. Mark's Square (Piazza San Marco) is the principal public square of Venice. The French Emperor, Napoleon Bonaparte, called St. Mark's Square as the drawing room of Europe. St. Mark's Basilica is one of the most popular cathedrals in Europe. Other popular features of St. Mark's Square include  the Clock Tower and the magnificent Roman arches and marble facade. I am also amazed at how friendly the pigeons were at the square.

St. Peter's Square (Piazza San Pietro) together with St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City is a must-see for Catholics visiting Rome. One gets an overwhelming feeling of spirituality while visiting the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter's Basilica and St. Peter's Square.

At the center of St. Peter's Square is an Egyptian Obelisk made of red granite. It was originally constructed at Heliopolis during Egypt's Fifth Dynasty. The Roman Emperor Augustus relocated it to Alexandria where it stayed until the Roman Emperor Caligula moved it to Rome in 37 AD. In 1586, Pope Sixtus VI moved it to its current location.

The Colosseum in Rome is probably the most impressive structure built during the Roman Empire. Its original name was the Flavian Amphitheater. One's first impression of the Colosseum is its enormous size. Roman Emperors used the Colosseum to entertain the Roman public with spectacular and often bloody games involving gladiators and wild animals.
